Personal grooming and beauty products retailer Shaver Shop says sales are up in the second half, with wellbeing and personal care top of mind for consumers who are returning to malls to shop.
Overview of shaver shop
Shaver Shop runs 121 bricks-and-mortar stores and in pre-COVID-19 times generated about 29 per cent of sales from online channels. It was hurt by extensive store closures in NSW and Victoria in the September and December quarters.
The retailer, which was founded in 1986, said on Thursday in-store and online sales gained in the second half of fiscal 2022, while gross margins were consistent with the levels achieved in the prior corresponding half-year period.
Based on unaudited management accounts through May 31 and the early trading performance in June, Shaver Shop expects sales for the full fiscal year of between $221 million and $223 million.
Same-store sales for the full year to date are up 3.7 per cent and online sales year to date gained 27.5 per cent.
Despite the surge in clipper sales during the lockdowns, Shaver Shop said sales in the hair-cutting category – clipper, trimmer, body groomer, nose and ear trimmer – had continued to grow in the second half.
The company estimates full-year 2022 net profit after tax to be in the range of $16.25 million to $16.75 million.
In fiscal 2021, net profit climbed by 68 per cent to $17.5 million while sales were up 9.6 per cent to $214 million.
DIY personal care
The retailer started the year in a difficult patch as many bricks-and-mortar stores were closed last July and August, denting sales by 7.3 per cent, despite online sales jumping 53 per cent.
Shaver Shop chief executive Cameron Fox said on Thursday customers were returning to the stores after a disrupted shopping period caused by COVID-19 restrictions.
“Our store teams are doing a fantastic job in delighting these customers as evidenced by our service metrics being at, or near, all-time highs. And while this has led to a moderation in online sales growth in the second half, I am very pleased that we are growing off the exceptional online results of FY2021,” he said.
“Wellbeing and personal care are top of mind for many consumers and, as a result, many of the products Shaver Shop sells are considered a non-discretionary purchase.”
